In the Tenth Anniversary Book, Watterson writes, "Boy did I get letters about this one." People were really mad! I guess he and his editors agreed to change it in the Complete collection. In the original first panel, Calvin is asking if he was adopted. This is how it appears in the Complete collection. More Calvin and Hobbes minutia! Check out this strip But I thought it was so they could chop the top off and use it as another weekday comic for free or whatever, rather than just scrapping it entirely. Yeah i noticed the first 2 sunday panels were always their own little comic that tied into the rest. Now that you mention it, his later stuff starts to deviate from that more frequently and the result is a freer feel. I eventually noticed the pattern as a kid reading his comics, but I figured it was just a personal choice. Any Sunday strip that deviates from the 2/3/3 format shown in the above strip was only possible because Watterson put his foot down and said "either print the whole thing or don't print it at all," IIRC you can see it pretty prominently in the Garfield Sunday strips too, usually the first gigantic panel is mostly just the strip's name. Until he made his stand, the first 2 panels of each Sunday strip had to be "throwaway" (not contributing to the overall strip, etc.) because some newspaper publishers reduced their per strip size allotment, so they could print C&H on Sunday by simply dropping the first 2 panels.

This is also a good example of why Watterson fought so hard for his print size/format.
